Najat El Hashmi

The daughter of a Moroccan Muslim family, when she was eight years old she moved to Vic, the city where she grew up. She studied Arabic Philology at the University of Barcelona. She has acted as a cultural mediator in Vic and as a reception technician in Granollers. She published her first book in 2004, Jo també sóc catalana (labutxaca, 2004). In 2008 she won the Ramon Llull Award with L’ últim patriarca (Planeta, 2008), also awarded the Prix Ulysse and a finalist for the Prix Méditerranée étranger 2009. This novel has been translated into ten languages. In 2011 she published La caçadora de cossos (Columna, 2011). With La filla estrangera (labutxaca, 2015) she won the BBVA Sant Joan Award and the City of Barcelona Award. In the essay Sempre ha parlat per nosaltres (Edicions 62, 2019) she denounces the multiple traps and forms of discrimination suffered by women. El lunes nos querrán  (Destino, 2021), her new novel, has received the Nadal Award.
